Two of the most common kinds
of housing assistance programs are subsidized housing and a Section 8 voucher.
They are both federal
programs for assisting low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled to
afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market.
The rent is usually 30% of your family's monthly gross adjusted income.
Subsidized housing is where
the specific unit is subsidized in agreement between the Housing Authority, the
landlord, and you the tenant.
A Section 8 voucher is where
the voucher can be used on any unit as long as the landlord agrees to enter
contract with the Housing Authority and you, the tenant.
The Housing Authority has a program for people who live in housing assisted under the Housing Choice Voucher Program. It is called Earned Income Disallowance for Persons with Disabilities. People can qualify because they have a disability and have been unemployed for at least one year. Through this program, your earnings will not be counted toward your rent for the first 12 months of employment. If your employment continues for the following 12 months, the increase is counted, but only at 50 percent. If you have any questions you may contact your local Housing Authority.
